KAREEM J. MORTIMER

Kareem J. Mortimer is a Bahamian filmmaker that has worked globally. Over the past five years he has won over 30 awards for his film projects, has had his work distributed in over forty countries and reviewed by the New York Times, Variety, IndieWire and The Hollywood Reporter.

This year his film Passage was named by Cine Caribes as one of the ten best Caribbean films and named Kareem as a director you should already know. In 2013, Kareem was named by The Bahamas Tribune as one of the 40 Bahamians under 40 creating change in his community. That year also saw him nominated for the prestigious Yellow Robin Award, win Best Short Film at the Trinidad and Tobago Film Festival for Passage, Director’s Award at Portland Maine Film Festival, and Best Film at Fort Lauderdale International Film Festival GBI, a participant as the Cine Qua Non Lab with award winning writer Sabrina Dhawan and a coveted spot as one of ten global talents at the Toronto International Film Festival as a Talent Lab participant. He also was a finalist at WorldView/Tribeca pitch competition and won Telefilm Canada Caribbean Tales pitch competition for his feature in

development Cargo.

Kareem has made short music documentaries for the syndicated show Hip Hop Nation: Notes from the Underground; and has written and directed the short Narrative film Float that has won 5 international awards and distribution in North America, Germany, Australia, and Austria. Float received a Broadcast premiere on LOGO. Moving Pictures Magazine crowned Float as one of five short films to look out for and Kareem a writer/director to watch. Subsequently, he has directed the documentary I Am Not A Dummy and the feature film Children Of God. Children of God has won 18 awards, distributed in 24 territories, theatrical exposure in the US, Netherlands , Switzerland, UK and a 2 year broadcast deal on SHOWTIME. Children of God was also named by BET as one of the top ten movies of the year and one of the top features to watch by The Independent. He also assisted Richard Von Maur on the family film, Wind Jammers that was sold worldwide to FilmWorks International. He is also 2007 alumni of Berlinale Talents.

ALEXANDER I. YOUNIS

Vice President, Co-Founder

Alexander Younis is an Austrian filmmaker with extensive experience in business and the arts. Since 2003 he has successfully founded and lead companies in Europe and developed the business concept for the Best Ever Group – Bahamas first indigenous film production company. He is directly involved in the financing, production and distribution of the company's products. 

Younis founded his first business at the age of 21 in the Information Technology industry. He thrived for several years as an independent Financial Services Manager before being courted to serve as a Consulting Director at one of Austria's biggest financial services companies INVESTcon.

In 2009 Younis founded two companies providing economic forest management with clients in Central and Eastern Europe including Austria, Slovakia, Serbia and Romania. As Executive Chairman, Younis established a capital market prospectus and developed long term strategies for ecological sustainable forestry management.

Before launching Best Ever Film, Younis spearheaded a successful real estate development in one of Austria’s most visited skiing areas with his international development entity Coeptum Bonum GmbH. During his career he has traveled extensively, residing in Eastern-Europe and Canada.

During his career he has travelled extensively, residing in eastern Europe and Canada. Younis’ discipline in business extends to his commitment to develop his different personal interests such as the studies of ancient literature, practice of yoga and various martial arts, as a helicopter pilot, free-diver and musician. These diverse interests and his extensive world travel eventually led him towards an artistic path of writing, producing and directing films. 2012-2014 he produced and directed short films shot in Austria, Egypt and the Bahamas respectively, as well worked as producer on Brigidy Bram 2016.

Since 2013 Younis resides in The Bahamas also developing his first feature "Bliss" as writer/director. Younis produced Best Ever Film’s first feature “Cargo”, shot entirely in Nassau The Bahamas, for worldwide distribution. Cargo is to date the biggest indigenously produced feature film production in The Bahamas.

LOWELL J. MORTIMER, OBE

Director

His Excellency Mr. Lowell J. Mortimer OBE is the non-resident High Commissioner of the Commonwealth of The Bahamas to India.

Mr. Mortimer, an attorney-at-law, is the principal of Mortimer & Co. and the President of Campbell Shipping Company. He is also the founder of the LJM Maritime Academy, a high-tech maritime school that is an engine of maritime sector development and education in the Commonwealth of The Bahamas.

An educator and jurist in public service for many years, Mr. Mortimer began his career as a biology teacher within the Ministry of Education in 1964 and would later serve as Acting Stipendiary & Circuit Magistrate, Acting Registrar General, and Chairman of the Copyright Royalty Tribunal. His Chairmanship of the Education Loan Authority, his Co-Chairmanship of the National Scholarship Advisory Committee, and his membership of the Council of the College of The Bahamas underscored his love for the discipline of education and the development of our young people.

For his contributions to nation-building, he was named Distinguished Officer of the British Empire (OBE) on the Queen’s Birthday Honours List in 2009. Mr. Mortimer previously served as the Honourary Consul-General for the Republic of Turkey to the Commonwealth of The Bahamas, and is currently a director on the board of Abilities Unlimited.

 

ANDREW O’BRIEN II

Director, Secretary

Andrew O’Brien is a founding partner of the law firm Glinton | Sweeting | O’Brien and practices commercial, corporate and real estate law in The Bahamas. As former Chairman of the Real Estate Section of the Bahamas Bar Association, Mr. O’Brien was instrumental in organizing real estate practitioners and developing a forum to discuss real property issues and legislation. Mr. O’Brien served on the legal team for Kareem Mortimer’s movie Children of God.

When not practicing law, Mr. O’Brien has turned his efforts toward advancing the film community in The Bahamas, serving as Chairman—and most recently Ambassador—of the Bahamas International Film Festival.

 

LAUREN HOLOWESKO

Director

Lauren Holowesko is a Bahamian businesswoman who is currently the project manager and director of the Island House, a 30-room boutique hotel in Western New Providence that will also feature six rental apartments, two restaurants, a cafe, spa, gym, squash and paddle courts, a movement studio for fitness classes, and an independent art house cinema—all of which she is extremely hands-on with.

Ms. Holowesko has obtained a bachelor’s degree from Georgetown University where she majored in Art History and minored in Studio Art; she also received a master’s degree in Art Business from the Sotheby’s Institute of Art. Lauren has worked at Phillips De Pury & Company and Carpenters Workshop Gallery in London, where she served as Gallery Assistant Manager.

BEAT M. SCHLAGENHAUF

Director

Mr. Beat Martin Schlagenhauf serves as Investment Advisor and Portfolio Manager at Schlagenhauf & Patner Portfolio Management firm. Mr. Schlagenhauf has been a Principal of Schlagenhauf & Partners for the past 16 years. Before starting his own business in 1987, he worked at Rothschild Bank based in Zurich as Portfolio Manager and Vice Chairman for 9 years.

Mr. Schlagenhauf has been an Independent Director of EastPharma Ltd. since December 2009. He has been Independent Director at Deva Holding AS since June 28, 2012 and served as its Director since May 2011. Mr. Schlagenhauf served as a Director of Crystal Rock Holdings, Inc. (formerly Vermont Pure Holdings Ltd) from July 1993 to November 1, 2005.

Since 2013, Mr. Schlagenhauf has resided in The Bahamas where he works on several charity projects he has personally initiated such as "Children's Haven"; also collaborating with the government of The Bahamas to engage in developments for the local community addressing education, health and security.

MICHAEL UNWIN

Director, Treasurer

Michael is an investment advisor at RBC Dominion Securities in The Bahamas, where he is responsible for providing clients with sound and professional investment advice in order to help achieve their financial goals.

Michael graduated from Dalhousie University in Halifax, Canada in 2000 with a degree in Economics and joined RBC Dominion Securities in Toronto shortly thereafter. Michael successfully completed his Canadian Securities course in 2003 and, thereafter, added more than 18 specialized qualifications, including those permitting him to advise with respect to derivative securities and options. He also has advanced qualifications in financial planning and investment management techniques. He is currently completing his Chartered Investment Management certification.
